We are energy bodies. Energy surrounds us in layers and runs through us in pathways that form the foundation for our health. Like oxygen and blood, energy needs to flow though the body in order to sustain our health. Sometimes these energy fields or paths are blocked or compromised and the energy is stagnate.

Using heightened physical and intuitive sensitivity, the energy practitioner will act as a conduit or channel for energy to the client. They will help the body clear away energy that is no longer needed or help to move the energy to restore its flow. The energy used comes from the Universe and the Earth, not from the practitioners own source of energy. The practitioner uses a heart-centered, focused intention for the client’s highest good.

It is believed that we are all connected energetically to each other and to the earth. This is what enables the practitioner to “tune in” to the body’s energy needs. The body is designed to heal itself and proper energy flow can jumpstart that process.

The Healing Touch Program™ (HTP) is endorsed by the American Holistic Nurses’ Association and was founded by Janet Mentgen, BSN, RN, HNC, CHTP/I. Janet had practiced energy based healthcare since 1980 and was honored as the nurse of the year by the American Holistic Nurses’ Association for her work in touch therapy.

HTP is an energy approach to healing and uses specific, non-invasive, hands-on/off techniques to clear and balance the human energy field. It compliments conventional health care by using the client’s own body’s ability to self-heal as a result of the heart-centered connection established by the practitioner.

Some examples by which Healing Touch can benefit overall health are: decreasing stress, supporting the immune system, increasing mobility after surgery, pain relief and accelerated recovery after surgery. Not only is HTP used extensively in the nursing profession, but hospitals, nursing care facilities and hospices across the world are beginning to recognize the effects of HTP and are actually prescribing the sessions to their patients.

Healing Touch is also a philosophy. It is viewed as a sacred, caring, healing art. It is believed that the promotion of healing by a practitioner is based solely on the connection that the practitioner has with the client and the practitioner’s intent to heal.

HTP is not a religion and does not require any religious beliefs of it’s practitioners or clients.

Massage is good for you. We all know this to be true. Yet sometimes clients will experience soreness and achiness immediately after the massage or for a couple of days after the treatment. Keep in mind that massage is passive exercise and it moves lymph, blood, toxins, waste products, etc through your body. This is why your therapist tells you to drink plenty of water after your massage. It is also normal to have increased urine output because your body wants to get all the yucky stuff out. Now sometimes the soreness lasts longer than three days. If this happens your therapist was working too deep on your body and they will need to use lighter pressure next time. It is possible to work deep using lighter pressure. “No pain, no gain” does not need to apply to massage! How can your body relax enough to heal if you are tensed up in pain? Therapeutic massage can be uncomfortable and at times you may feel discomfort but you should not be in so much pain that you jump off the massage table!

Here are my aftercare tips to follow after your massage session:

1. Drink an extra quart of water within 24 hours of your massage to help your body detoxify.

2. Take a nice warm Epsom salt bath.* I like to add lavender essential oil to mine. This will help alleviate joint pain.

3. Rest. Go to bed early if you can to enjoy a sound peaceful night’s sleep. You will wake up so refreshed in the morning.

*If you are diabetic, pregnant, or have high blood pressure please check with your doctor before using this detox bath combination.

Remember, experiencing a little soreness a couple days after you’ve had a massage especially if it was a deep tissue treatment is normal. If the discomfort lasts past three days contact your therapist so they can give you tips to help you feel better and you can alert them to the fact that they may have worked too deeply and need to be gentler next time.
